Coventry's flagship event, Godiva Festival, will be returning to the event calendar this summer and the Council are asking for people's vote to decide the location. People will be faced with a straightforward choice of keeping with its current location in the War Memorial Park or in a new location, Coventry city centre.
The popular free annual event, which was cancelled for the first-time ever in 2012 due to terrible weather conditions, has attracted over 100,000 visits in previous years and attracts visitors from all over the country. Last September also saw a city centre-based event, titled 'Godiva in the Square' held in Broadgate.
Councillor John Mutton, Leader of Coventry City Council, said:
"Given the extremely difficult financial situation the Council currently faces, I am proud that as a Council we have made a commitment to hosting a Godiva Festival for this year. The terrible weather which forced the first-ever cancellation of last summer's festival has required us to look at alternative options. Everyone is passionate about the Godiva Festival and will have their own view on where they want this year's festival to be held – and I've got my own strong preference – however, we want the public of Coventry to have their say on where they want it to be held. I encourage everyone to play their part by voting over the next two weeks so we can see what their preference is."
