Air Raid Siren And All Clear Siren To Mark 70th Anniversary Of Coventry Blitz

Last updated : 21 September 2010 By Coventry City Council

The air raid warning and all-clear siren are to sound around the Coventry Cathedral ruins as part of a ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of Coventry Blitz.

They will mark the beginning and end of a two minute silence and will only be heard around the cathedral and not across the city. The all-clear siren will then be followed by bells ringing out from St Michael's Spire.

The two minute silence is part of a civic ceremony that will be held at Coventry Cathedral that is open to everyone.

Organisers are particularly keen for Coventry Blitz survivors to attend the event which will be held on Sunday, 14th November.

A wide range of events are planned for the day to commemorate the 70th anniversary which also coincides with Remembrance Sunday.

Cllr Brian Kelsey, The Lord Mayor of Coventry who lived through the Blitz on the city said a decision over the siren was not taken lightly.

"Views from people living in the city were sought on this issue and over all younger people felt that it should be heard," he said.

"But with the older generation - and particularly Blitz survivors - views were split down the middle. That is understandable and we were very minded to take into account their views as I know from experience the vivid memories this can bring.

"It is the reason why the sirens will sound out across the Cathedral but not across the city."

The Lord Mayor added: "The civic ceremony on the evening of Sunday 14th November is open to everyone in the city and it would be wonderful for Blitz survivors to come along too but obviously they need to be mindful that the siren will be sounding."
