Coventry Sphinx were beaten 5-3 at Westfields in a Midland Alliance fixture this afternoon.

Sphinx boss Paul Charnley was without a midfield quartet of Robbie Stevenson,Adie Fisher, Dave Drennan and James Halton for this trip to Herefordshire and watched his side fall two goals down in the opening twelve minutes from James Upton (7) and Paul Allam (11).

Five minutes into the second half, Sphinx reduced the arrears when eighteen year old Gary Mead scored his first ever first team goal and in the 56th minute, they were level thanks to a Tom Thacker penalty.

Allam added two more goals in the 65th and 70th minutes before Jamie McAteer made it 4-3, nine minutes later.

A fifth from Jamie Cuss was added with five minutes remaining to condemn Sphinx to their second successive away defeat.

Sphinx remain second in the table, five points behind leaders Market Drayton who were held 2-2 at Coleshill.

Next Saturday, Sphinx enter the FA Vase. Last season, the Coventry side reached the Quarter-Final replay stage and will be hoping for a run in the competition when they travel to Stone Dominoes.

Coventry Sphinx Reserves drew 3-3 with Gresley Rovers at Sphinx Drive this afternoon. Youth teamer Dave Freeman scored twice for Danny McSheffrey's side in a Midland Comination Reserve Division game with Rich Elliott also on the scoresheet.
