We Made Hard Work Of It - Hopkins

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins felt that his side made hard work of their 2-1 victory against Shepshed Dynamo.

Hopkins told the Sphinx website: “I made changes all over the park and it worked I thought for the first twenty minutes.

“We managed to get two early goals both from Chris Gumery and then we stopped. I think we thought it was too easy.

“2-0 is a horrible score-line as you need one more goal to kill a game off and if they get one back it 2-1 and game on and that’s what it was for the last 10 minutes.

“It was nice to see Gummers get his goals, he had a few chances where he’s hit them too sweet and keepers have pulled off good saves, but i added him to squad to get the glancing goals we haven’t scored and along with Ash Cain, Rickie Cutting and Luke Williams once back we have a good mixture of forwards that are capable of getting all types of goals.

“We had chances in both the first and second half to make it 3 4 or even 5 but we didn’t and that’s the difference in finishing 1st, 2nd or 7th again, we need to learn to kill games off. I don’t have any issues with the home form, not many teams come to our place and boss us, but we need to improve the away form and to do that i think we are lacking a little experience.

“That doesn’t go against what Coventry Sphinx is all about in giving young players chances and again last night, two youth team lads on the pitch, with five who finished youth football last season and you never know what you can win with youngsters!!

“We have the FA Cup on Saturday and its must win game for this club, which would also set up a nice home tie with Bedworth United, whom we played against pre- season and will make for a interesting tie to follow if we are successful. We have had them watched and will do again tonight so hopefully that will help us.”
