COVENTRY SPHINX 2-1 COLESHILL TOWN BY KEV MONKS

Coventry Sphinx were down to ten man but battled to beat Coleshill Town 2-1 in a Midland Alliance League Cup tie.

In pouring rain, both sides were adapted to the conditions and played some good football in a hard fought first half.

Calum Woodward, who was the man of the match covering every blade of grass and making some superbly timed tackles, had the first shot.

In the 17th minute, the Sphinx support were on their feet when a long ball into the area was met by Tom Thacker, the ball flew into the area but Nathan Puliscano was on the line to clear.

Ben Usher missed a good chance when clear through two minutes later, but Sphinx got back at their opponents who were promoted to the Midland Alliance this season.

Jerome Murdock made a surging run down the right wing and delivered a cross to the far post for Tom Thacker to dive and head into the net.

In the 31st minute, Coleshill won a free kick on the edge of the area after Terry Ward was adjudged by referee Paul Bliss to committed a foul. James Dance, who had an excellent game for Martin Sockett's side took the kick and saw his first effort blocked before firing wide when the ball rebounded to him.

Nine minutes into the second half, Terry Ward's evening went very sour. Firstly, he got in the way of Dance cross and the ball deflected past Carl O'Neill for the equaliser.

Then, Ward brought down Usher. Mr Bliss reached into his pocket and produced a yellow then red card.

Paul Charnley kept three at the back until the 71st minute. This was after Sphinx had gone back in front thanks to Kyle Rhodes getting to the far post to head home a Robbie Stevenson corner.

Sphinx had chances but three minutes from time, a post saved them when Dance's cross was deflected off O'Neill's left hand post for a corner and meant that Sphinx booked their place in the next round.

On Saturday, Sphinx travel to Studley with Sphinx Reserves also on the road at Gresley Rovers.

Elswhere, Bedworth lost 4-3 at home to AFC Sudbury. Connelly, Beard and Edmond gave the Greenbacks a 3-1 lead in the first half before the visitors struck with three goals in seven minutes in the second half.
