Ten Man Sphinx Earn Deserved Point

Ten man Coventry Sphinx battled back to snatch a 1-1 draw against Quorn in a Midland Football League Premier Division fixture.

In Sphinx's last home midweek match of the season, Luke Hopkins gave youngster Kyle Carey a start up front alongside Ashley Cain and Sphinx were almost ahead in the eighth minute when the referee played an advantage and Cain fired just over from inside the area.

In the eleventh minute, Sphinx were down to ten men when Gio Dainty was red-carded for a foul from behind.

Luke Hopkins shuffled his pack and after Cain had fired over, there was nothing his players could do to stop Dom Brennan from giving Quorn the lead in the 21st minute with a low drive into the net.

Carl O'Neill pushed one shot over for a corner and then was on hand to grab on the line as Quorn went looking for a second goal.

The visitors forced a corner and a save from O'Neill to deny Liam Read before the Downes brothers were booked on the stroke of half-time for some shoving.

Club captain Ashley Jackson was sent on for the second half and Sphinx were soon controlling the play.

Ashley Cain was proving a handful winning a corner in the 63rd minute, whilst Jackson Downie worked hard in the midfield to keep Sphinx pushing forward.

A Ricky Fletcher header was cleared off the line in the 72nd minute forcing another corner which was caught.

Quorn won a corner seven minutes later, but Sphinx's spell of pressure, which started early in the second half, continued.

Luke Downes fired wide from a Cain pass and won another corner in the 81st minute.

Kyle Jaynes came on for Jack Rooney who had run himself into the ground and with his first touch, he was left all alone inside the penalty area. The Quorn defence stood as the ball came over but there was no flag as Jaynes lashed the ball into the net, causing scenes of jublilation amongst the Sphinx players and support.

The goal had been coming and was deserved and in stoppage time, Sphinx were denied a dramatic victory when an Ash Jackson free kick hit the underside of the bar and bounced down on the line before being cleared.

A win would have been a brilliant result but the Sphinx players were cheered off having done superbly with ten men for more than eighty minutes.
