Coventry Sphinx put in a superb performance but only had a point from a trip to Stratford Town.

Danny McSheffrey included former Sky Blue Tom Cudworth whilst Stratford boss Moreton Titterton, himself a former City youngster had Avun Jephcott on the bench.

In the third minute, Sphinx keeper Carl O''Neill grabbed a long ranger from Martin Thompson and it was the Sphinx defence which weathered an early spell of pressure and then helped with a good move which saw Luke Williams have a backheader caught.

Much of the game centred in the middle third of the pitch with home keeper Joe Mellings forced to clear away with long clearances. Andy Gregory headed a 30th minute free kick in the side netting.

Eighteen seconds into the second half, Stratford's best player Tom James got down the byline and sent over a cross which Carl O''Neill could only get a hand to and Martin Thompson rose to head into the net from three yards.

Adam Bilic forced Mellings into the save of the match so far when his 50th minute powerful drive from inside the area had to be palmed over.

In the 61st minute, Sphinx, whose chances of anything from this match, had been written off by headlines in this morning's CT, won a corner. Robbie Stevenson took the flag kick and curled it straight into the net.

With Sphinx's defence winning the aerial battles, Stratford boss Moreton Titterton sent on former Coventry City and Coventry Sphinx striker Avun Jephcott.

Luke Wiilliams almost added a second in the 75th minute when he looped the ball over and Carl O''Neill made good saves to deny James and Jephcott.

Stratford won two corners and in the dying seconds, Danny Fraser sent over a cracking cross which Mark Owen headed over from three yards to ensure that Sphinx had a point rather than the three they deserved.
