Coventry Sphinx were close to pulling off a shock victory against Midland Alliance League leaders Market Drayton Town at Sphinx Drive this afternoon.

Paul Charnley's side, won both matches last season against the Shropshire side, who have won all three of their league games this season.

It came as no surprise to the Sphinx support that the home side were ahead inside five minutes thanks to a goal from Kyle Rhodes. Callum Woodward scored his third goal in three matches five minutes later with Jerome Murock adding a third just before the break.

Drayton had scored twice in the first half and added a third in the second half to earn a share of the spoils.

Danny McSheffrey's Sphinx Reserve side lost 2-1 at Chasetown.

Sphinx travel to Friar Lane & Epworth on Monday afternoon. Kick off is at 3pm.
