Coventry Sphinx finished their Midland Alliance League campaign with a 4-0 victory at Coalville Town.

Sphinx never allowed the Leicestershire team who had finished second in the league to settle and when Danny McSheffrey moved his three man midfield back to a four man midfeld, Sphinx looked the better side.

Neither side were happy with the decison making of referee Mr Clark in a what was not a dirty game in the slightest and the home side were aggrieved that they were not awarded a penalty when Martin Thompson went down in the tenth minute.

Sphinx battled and chased every ball. This kept Coalville to one main chance when Jermaine Gordon got into the area but Carl O'Neil in the Sphinx goal saved with his legs.

In the 33rd minute, Kelvin Philips had a shot blocked inside the area and ten minutes later, Jamie McAteer had a header from a corner cleared off the line.

Six minutes into the second half, Sphinx were denied a penalty when a Jamie McAteer shot was clearly handballed but there was soon plenty to cheer for the Sphinx support.

In the 61st minute, Jerome Murdock added to his two goals on Thursday night when he sent a low drive from the edge of the area into the net to open the scoring.

Two minutes later, the Sphinx bench and support were celebrating again when Josh Ruff raced forward. His persistence saw him escape the clutches of his marker and square the ball for Kelvin Phillips to slot home.

The noisy home fans showed their disapproval by lighting flares but Sphinx were in no mood to quit now and added a third through Adam Kinder who had only been on the pitch for 42 seconds when he broke through to stroke the ball past the home keeper.

Then another substitute Tom Muldoon got in on the act, when he tore down the left and hit a lovely drive which flew into the net for the fourth goal.

As the game drew to a close, Sphinx had Craig Goodbody sent off and manager Danny McSheffrey sent to the stand after the referee had waved play on following a head injury, but left Owen Street happy with a 4-0 victory.

Sphinx end their season with the Polymac Midland Alliance League Cup final on May 11th versus Westfields at Walsall FC.
