Super Sphinx Catch Stratford Napping

Coventry Sphinx put in a superb performance against a Stratford side who had only lost once in 24 games winning a thrilling game 5-2.

Carl O'
Neill and Tom Cudworth were the only changes from the drab performance against Ellesmere three days previous.

And what a difference 3 days make as this performance was full of passion, commitment, a never say die attitude a complete roll reversal from Saturday. Sphinx started the better of the two sides passing the ball well, good movement off the ball but with no real end product.

Stratford soon got a hold of the game and for a 15 minute period had Sphinx penned in there own half and but for the outstanding  Carl O'Neill in the Sphinx goal could easily found themselves three up. Firstly O'Neill turned round a Tom James shot from the esulting corner he tipped over a Thompson header five minutes later he turned another shot round the post.

It was to change on the half hour mark when a James Robbins corner was put into his own net by the Stratford defender when under pressure from Kyle Rhodes. Three minutes later a cross from Chris Long found Luke Williams unmarked in the area and headed back across the keeper for Sphinx's second of the night.

Stratford again had a period of pressure but this time could not find a route past a resolute Sphinx defence. It was this pressure that led to a Sphinx third goal, O'Neill collected a cross and immediately launched a long all up front which Williams chased down and coolly finished to the keepers left for his second and O'Neill's first assist of the season.

Sphinx thought they had done the hard work but how wrong could they of been, Stratford started the half all guns blazing and were putting the Sphinx defence under all sorts of pressure.

Sphinx to a man held firm until the 59th minute when the impressive Tom James produced a corker of goal from 25 yards (Tom James Alliance Player Of The Year I wouldn't be surprised).

Four minutes later Stratford got a second when Andy Gregory headed in a James cross.

The visiting supporters could smell blood but Sphinx are made of sterner things and soon got back into the game with Rhodes, Billic and Saunders winning the midfield battle indeed it was Saunders who was fouled on the edge of the area that led to Sphinx fourth goal.

Donaldson stood over the ball and nonchalantly played the ball on the ground into the area for the on running Saunders who could not hat a foot to it but with the Stratford's defence bemused Terry Ward slid in to score past an equally bemused Mellings.

Sphinx were now content to soak up the pressure and hit Stratford on the break and this they did with probably the goal of the game with Arsenal-esque counter attacking football, Long laid the all into Donaldson who flicked the ball into Williams path who strode into the Stratford half and laid a peach of a ball into Saunders who took one touch to draw the keeper before calmly slotting the ball into the net.

Stratford were now well and truly beaten and it was Sphinx who had the last action of the match with a revitalised Donaldson hitting the wood work before the Referee blew the final whistle.
