COVENTRY SPHINX 5-0 CAUSEWAY UNITED

Coventry Sphinx went to the top of the Midland Football League Premier Division with a superb 5-0 victory over Causeway United.

At Sphinx Drive, a crowd of 109 saw Causeway plant a header onto the crossbar with only 53 seconds. Luke Hopkins side started to find their feet with Adam Bilic and club captain Ash Jackson controlling the midfield and Ashley Cain, in a free role, working hard.

Luke Downes fired over and had a shot blocked but in the 23rd minute, Sphinx took the lead when Adam Bilic was sent clear and he had time to lob the ball over Aaron Gayle and into the net.

Chris Gummery headed over but the Halesowen based side went up the other end and had an Aaron Lloyd shot blocked. The ball was loose and Ashman came in to strike O’Neil’s left hand post.

Gummery had another chance but he set himself up for a shot, his effort was blocked for a corner. Sphinx continued to attack and in the 35th minute, it was two thanks to a great ball from Jackson Downie picking out Luke Downes who was thirty yards out. Downes unleased a thunderous shot and the ball flew into the net much to the delight of the Sphinx support.

Jackson headed over, Cain fired over and a Gummery shot was blocked by the feet of Gayle as Sphinx went into the break two goals to the good.

Both side made changes in the first twenty minutes of a second half which was reasonably even until Ashley Cain went on a run in the 78th minute and was up-ended. Mr Lane awarded a penalty and Ashley Cain stepped up to scored Sphinx’s third goal.

Cain was involved again in the 85th minute, when Sphinx scored a fourth. Cain won and took a free kick and the ball came back over for substitute Nathanel McKenzie to head home from inside the six yard box.

The former Coventry City winger and Ex On The Beach star, completed a Man Of The Match performance in the 90th minute when he wrapped up a superb team performance when he raced onto a thirty yard pass from McKenzie and thumped an unstoppable shot high into the net to give Sphinx, who travel to Quorn on Saturday, a 5-0 victory.
