Sphinx Youth Lose First Ever Premier Game

Coventry Sphinx Youth team were beaten 3-1 in their first ever game in the top flight of the Midweek Floodlit Youth League Premier Division.

New managers Neil Moran and Steve Shea have been brought into the club after Coach John Woodward took up a coaching role with Sphinx's first team and with most of last season's team being either too old or now playing for Danny McSheffrey's reserve team, a number of players have been drafted in from Coventry Copsewood.

Sphinx played reasonably well in the opening half against Sutton Coldfield Town but were hit with two goals in two minutes. The first was a penalty easily converted after a blatant handball in the 32nd minute and the second saw the ball swept home following a 34th minute corner.

Sphinx pulled one back, five minutes later when Dave Freeman clipped home from close range.

Seven minutes into the second half, Sutton's number ten lashed home to make it 3-1 to the visitors.

Sphinx had two chances in the second half to get something out of the game but a bad miss and late on substitute's Dec Docherty hitting the post from a free kick meant that the first game in this new division ended in defeat.

Sphinx travel to AFC Telford next Wednesday.
