Coventry Sphinx threw away their first ever chance of a victory at Bridgnorth Town this afternoon.

Danny McSheffrey and Lee Knibbs were able to keep most of the team that had beaten Studley on Tuesday night for their final away Midland Alliance game of the season.

Sphinx have taken 21 points from their last ten games and attacked down the slope of a Crown Meadow ground Sphinx have never won on, in the first half.

In the ninth minute, Sphinx won a corner and there were appeals for a penalty when a Liam Kay shot hit the hand of a Bridgnorth defender. However, referee Craig Taylor decided otherwise and it was not until the 14th minute that Pawel Tomczek got in a header following a Stevenson corner.

With the predicted rain not arriving and the beating sun slowing the pace of the game, much of the player centred in the middle third of the pitch.

Bridgnorth, managed by former Coventry City manager Lee Mills, relied on a tactic of launching balls into the box but they were met with the coolness of Jamie McAteer and Liam Kay who dealt with any threat.

In the 35th minute, a cracking twenty yard drive from Robbie Stevenson bounced off Jay Nash's left hand post.

Just before the interval, a Tomczek shot was blocked, the defence stood still expecting offside as Luke Williams fired into the net from a yard out.

In the 54th minute, Bridgnorth had Josh Bradburn harshly sent off for pulling down Luke Williams when Bradburn was not the last man.

With Paul Saunders pulling the strings for Sphinx in midfield, Arron Donaldson broke and fired over twice in the 62nd minute.

As the game wore on, the home management and crowd became increasingly frustrated with the referee who awarded Bridgnorth a 73rd minute penalty which Luke Chapman converted.

The anger switched to the Sphinx support, whose team were no longer showing the same application, they showed in the first half, when Jamie McAteer was red carded after Karl Griffiths tripped over his own legs a yard in front of him.

Then in the 82nd minute, Bridgnorth substitute Steve Brooke was given space to score from eight yards and send Sphinx to a defeat.
