Coventry Sphinx put in a hard working performance to beat Malvern Town 2-0 tonight in a Midland Alliance fixture.

On a cold, wet night at Sphinx Drive, Danny McSheffrey's side who again was without Kevin Thornton, got off to a great start when they took the lead in the sixteenth minute.

The goal came from a corner and saw Raman Manak receive the ball on the edge of the area and create himself a bit of space before driving a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Malvern who only arrived thirty minutes before kick off, won two corner and had a wind assisted 35 yard effort from Dave Reynolds fly just over the bar in the 28th minute.

Five minutes before the break, the Sphinx support thought they were on for a second goal when Adam Kinder raced through on goal. As Skyers advanced out of his goal, Kinder stroked the ball past him but agonisingly past the far post.

Either side of the break, Tom Muldoon has two good chances to keep Sphinx on the attack.

At the other end, Carl O'Neil was having a quiet night in goal as the well-marshalled Sphinx defence and midfield prevented Malvern from gaining any ground.

In the 67th minute, Sphinx lost Arron Donaldson who was carried off with a knee injury picked up in a brave challenge.

Kelvin Phillips was sent on and in the 75th minute, he was involved in a move that saw the ball played out to Tom Muldoon. Some good work from the winger, found Adam Kinder inside the area. He turned and hit a shot from ten yards which took a deflection to beat Skyers.

The visitors had their coach banished from the technical area as Kelvin Phillips fired wide from another good move.

Dave Reynolds was denied late on by a deflection that sent his goal bound effort out for a corner but Sphinx were well worth their victory.

On Saturday, Sphinx travel to Shifnal Town before taking on Barwell at home in a League Cup tie next Tuesday.
