COVENTRY SPHINX 3-2 HIGHGATE UNITED BY KEV MONKS

Coventry Sphinx beat Highgate United 3-2 in a Midland Alliance Fixture.

Sphinx boss Paul Charnley gave a debut to David Care and the former Leamington defender played his part as Sphinx had the better of the chances early on.

With man of the match Jimmy Halton providing some telling crosses and Robbie Stevenson pushing forward, striker Callum Woodward fired wide in the 20th minute and went just wide in the 37th and 38th minute.

These two chances were part of a ten minute spell of pressure from the home side and also included Scott Turner having to clear off the line.

This pressure finally brought the goal that Sphinx had been looking for. In the 42nd minute,Jerome Murdock got the ball inside the area and turned to drill into the net from seven yards.

The home support celebrated but on the stroke of half-time, the visiting fans were the ones cheering as a Highgate forward challenged Ashley Wilks and fell to the ground. Referee Mr Scott awarded a penalty and Steve Darlington thumped home the spot kick.

Despite having midfielder Adie Fisher limped off with a groin injury picked up during Saturday's FA Cup defeat against Barwell, Sphinx attacked from the start of the second half.

In the 63rd minute, they regained the lead when Jerome Murdock was on hand to fire home from close range a cross from the left flank.

Highgate were almost level in the 75th minute when some neat build up play set up Chris Haydon for a shot which curled onto the crossbar.

It was a miss which proved costly as Sphinx went further ahead in the 79th minute thanks to Callum Woodward collecting the ball some 25 yards out and launching an shot which flew into the net with the keeper helpless.

Six minutes from time, keeper Chris Daffern upended a Highgate player and Mr Scott awarded another penalty that was duly dispatched by Steve Darlington.

There were a few nervy moments but Sphinx held on to record their second victory of the season.

On Saturday, Sphinx are at home to league leaders Market Drayton Town and follow this with a trip to Friar Lane & Epworth on Monday afternoon.
