McSheffrey On McSheffrey

Former Coventry City striker Gary McSheffrey has been talking about his brother Danny who took over from Paul Charnley as manager of Coventry Sphinx back in June.

"I think it was only a matter of time before Danny went into management at the club because he has been here so long now," said Birmingham City's Gary to the CT.

"He has been very much the organiser at Sphinx whenever they have been on trips and they are a really tight bunch.

"He has got the respect of all his friends and so it is no surprise to me. And I think he will be decent at it.

"I think he will be a serious manager but able to have a craic at times. I think he will know how to treat each player, whether they need an arm round the shoulder, and talk to the players and be honest with them, and that's all players want."

"He was a good central midfielder as a player," he said. "When we were young, Daniel was always the one who played for Coventry Schools, the West Midlands, Coventry City's Centre of Excellence and he was well thought of locally.

"When he was released by Coventry I think it knocked him a bit but he went on to have a decent local career.

"I think at that stage you have to make a decision whether to keep trying to play at a professional level or get in the real world and earn a living and play for a hobby, and he made the most of it.

"I looked up to him. We played together a few times at primary school, although we didn't play that much later because when I was at the academy at Coventry and in the youth team I was not allowed to play locally as well, but growing up he was a good player and, to be honest, in terms of natural ability he was probably the better player in the family.

"He could pass the ball and do everything a midfielder should be able to do. I think as he got older he lost a bit of pace and that was probably one of the biggest reasons why he didn't go to the next level.

"A lot of it can also be about luck and opportunities and some people get it and some don't.

"The key is not to dwell on it, and to be fair to Daniel he has gone on to have a successful career in work and local football, and now being a manager hopefully he will be successful at that too."
