Hopkins Unlucky To Come Away With A Point

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins felt his side were unlucky to come away with only a point from their trip to Westfields on Saturday.

Speaking about the 2-2 draw to the Sphinx website, Hopkins said: "I thought we was unlucky to come away with only a point.

"The Westfield curse started at 11.30 when the coach buried itself in the overflow carpark!!

"Once we managed to get on another coach and set off we turned up late, which is nothing new to us at Westfields. It was a little rushed but perhaps in a way that helped the lads as they got changed straight away and warmed up. We made it sharp in the poor conditions of the warm up area and I really think it helped prepare us for battle, because at times that is what it was.

"We were without some big characters from previous squads. "Carl O'Neill was unavailable due to personal events, Matty Taylor is preparing for a uni trip to USA, Luke Downes is on a mid season skiing break plus Ash Wilks and Kyle Baxter are leaving the club to join Oadby Town in the United Counties league and I wish them all the best for the rest of the season.

"We have added Arron Opoku, a local lad who has the potential and frame to be a threat and a dangerous man with goals in our league, also Dan Pritchard from Rugby Town, Dan found minutes on a pitch hard to come by at Rugby and I imagine that is purely down to the level they compete at and his age and his stage of development, but he is a massive signing for us and I hope we can help him get back to that level and be playing regularly.

"We also dipped into the youth team again and in came Brad Harwick. Brad started the season with the first team and dropped off a little but his recent youth team form is very, very good and hopefully he's back on the upwards form and certainly has a large part to play at this club first team wise, as do all the youth lads featuring in the first team.

"Again Jack Downes was outstanding as ever and a contender for MOM. I thought, Kyle Carey worked hard to lead the line alongside Ash Cain, Jack Rooney, who people forget is still a youth age player getting his first goal in 35 apps this season which is massive for me. Plus the bench of Jacob Dodds and Kyle Jaynes, both have been match winners in their own right this season.

"We took the lead through Captain Ash Jackson playing at 60 per cent fit, but it was a case of when needs must and Ash wants to play.

" We again dominated the first 20 to 25 minutes of play, then we had a mad five minutes and we got punished. Martin Murphy, stepping up from the social team to fill Carlo's void, did well but was beaten by a soft first goal and second offside goal, so a little hard done by, but that’s football.

"2-1 down but back on top and creating chances and unlucky not to be 2-2 or 3-2 up at half time.

"At 2-1 we weren't out the game and it was important not to go three or four down so for the first 10 to 15 minutes of the second half, we had to be in the game.

"We got fresh legs on in Arron up top and a little tweak in system worked. We started to get some joy with their keeper pulling off some good saves and it was a case of when the second goal was going to come and it did through Jack Rooney with a good finish and his first for the senior team, more to follow I hope.

"We  looked good for a third goal and given another 5 minutes I think we would of got it but they held on and perhaps a point away at Westfields is a good result.

"Had I been offered that when the first coach sank I think I would have taken it but on reflection, I wouldn’t want to under estimate the lads effort as I felt a draw is hard done by.

This is a big week for the youth team of which so many feature for the first team, so we will do it as a club, also to prepare for Lye town on Saturday.

"We are again without Matty and Gio who has been outstanding this season. So there are a few bits to look at in training and hopefully we can put right what was a poor performance at their place earlier in the season."
