Hopkins Happy With The Win

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins was happy with his side's 2-1 win at Stourport Swifts on Saturday.

Hopkins told the Sphinx website: "We went there with mixed thoughts as they had come off the back of 6-0 loss at Hereford so we were aware of a backlash.

"They sit higher in the league than us and its always a tough place to go and grind out a result. But we felt confident after the last result and the fact we had managed to massively strengthen the team with Marc Albrighton and David Blenkinsopp gave a much stronger spine in the team

"Those two signings are very very experienced players you cant just find players like that easily, its not been completely easy getting them in but Bedworth Utd FC have helped out with letting them come across which we are grateful for. They were what we have needed all season and the proof straight away was in the result.

"We prepared well over the week and the lads trained well and we got in some good sessions after a weekend off and it seems to settle any nerves and our fitness is good for this time of season.

"The game started with a good pace and both teams tried to play and it was surprising how well the pitch held up for the first half and in total for the whole game. I thought it was going to get a lot worse than it was.

"We managed to make our pressure pay and got the goal we, perhaps deserved in previous weeks and within thirty minutes, we were two up and in control of the game and we didn’t really want half time to come if I’m honest.

" In the second half, Stourport had a good go at us and in every game we have played against them,  both teams always have a good spell and defended well at times and their goal came from a very good finish.

"But I am proud of the lads for the desire to win and it showed that results do mean something to the team and it’s a feeling we have gone without lately.

"There are many different shouts for Man Of The Match. The back four were tremendous and straight into action Brights showed his class and experience from minute 1 to 90.

"Middle of the park has never been an issue. Quinny and Blythe controlled it for me and looked solid, and Blenks gave me all he had and in the next two to three weeks, I think he will get better as he plays more minutes and puts some little niggles behind him and I want to see the Blenks who scored goals at Nuneaton, Gresley and Bedworth etc.

"We go again in a massive week for us preparing for the Vase game, hopefully this can bring us some joy this season. We seemed to have turned a corner so onwards and upwards is the hope."
