Hopkins- Draw Was A Fair Result

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins has said that a draw was fair result against Stourport Swifts on Saturday.

Speaking to the Sphinx website, Hopkins said:"We learnt a lot on Tuesday as a team where settling for a point would have been another point gained instead of another point lost. We learnt from our mistakes and achieved that Saturday.

"I thought Stourport were very much an older experienced team, well drilled in what they do but at time too predictable to be honest. We expected them to do certain things, which they have done in the times we have played against them certainly under me in the last few years. One thing they do normally do is score goals and when they win it is by 3 or 4 quite often. It was a usual formation, 4-4-2 away from home, narrow and compact and press high to win ball.

"So to keep a clean sheet was brilliant, it shows we are developing after a change of personnel and change in style of play. Player wise, we haven't hid from anyone in saying we are open to give the youth a chance and certainly Saturday was a big advert for that/

"On Saturday, four out of the five midfielders were 18 or under with two 16 year olds on the bench and two more 19 year olds in defence, but with the young lads, we have some brilliant older lads who are playing their part in developing the youngsters. There was easily fourteen contenders for MOM on Saturday and thats what makes me happy.

"We dug in and put a shift in, some of the football played was a joy to watch, I felt we had some good chances to win the game in the first half and one or two in the second, also noted that we rode our luck a couple of times, but sometimes you need that little bit of luck to go on and win games.

"But it’s another point, the home record still looking half decent and we go again this week. Training and a friendly against RAF Cosford on Wednesday in which plenty of the lads will feature in a game where we can look at players, formations and set pieces with no real pressure on us to win the game and hopefully we raise a few quid on the gate for “Help The Heroe’s” as well.
