Thomas was fast-tracked into the U18's and showed that he can compete with players a lot older last season.
His manager at City's Academy Greg Rioch told the club website: "We're absolutely delighted for Connor because he's worked very hard for this.
"With a number of our lads in the first team, Connor's absence makes the team a bit threadbare but as Academy manager that's a great problem to have.
"Connor will no doubt bring a wealth of experience back from his time with the England squad and we're all really pleased for him because he definitely deserves it."
