Coventry City U18’s were back to winning ways with a 3-2 victory over Sheffield United this morning.

In the opening minute at the Alan Higgs Centre, City keeper Shane Fagan made a terrific one handed save by diving to his right to push a Jake Eyre headed away for a corner.

Ian Foster and Greg Rioch’s side were straight back on the attack winning a corner from which Lewis Garner who had celebrated his 18th birthday this week, fired over from.

The Sky Blues worked well in midfield and were joined in their sortees on goal by full backs by Joe Pegg and Ryan Haynes, who both spent the half looking to go forward at every opportunity.

The pressure from these players as City knocked the ball round well on a cold but sunny morning, paid off in the 27th minute when the ball fell to Ben Maund on the right of the area and he rifled into the bottom corner to give City a lead.

The chances in a game, watched by Tim Fisher, his brute of a dog and Steve Waggott, continued with able captain Ricky Fletcher having a shot blocked and a great run and cross by the in form Lewis Rankin which teed up Garner who fired over.

Ryan Quinn also fired over the bar from a neat Haynes cross before the half ended with a powerful shot from Lewis Rankin skidding off Lynch’s left hand post.

City had two great chances from left wing crosses early in the second half but these were not taken and in the 56th minute, the Blades were level when Mr Wainman spotted a shove and awarded a penalty which Otis Khan duly dispatched sending Fagan the wrong way.

It was clear that there was more goals in this game and so it proved when Lewis Garner made the most of a defensive mistake and danced through to restore City’s lead in the 68th minute.

It was a lead that lasted less than two minutes, as from a free kick, United, got the ball to the far post and it was knocked back across fro Ryan Scarbrick to score from close range.

Still the Sky Blues persisted and in the 80th minute, City won a corner and there was substitute Jack Finch to bundle home after a melee.

There was a few late scares and a bit of handbags on the final whistle but City were able to record a hard fought and well deserved win.
