Academy Continues

It's been a long summer for all those involved with the Academy but it has been announced that City will continue with their Academy at least for another season.

It is a season which Academy Director Greg Rioch hopes will be a successful one.

Speaking to the club website at the first training session at the Alan Higgs Centre which again will stage U18's matches, Rioch said: "Having experience under the belt and with the good set of kids we have this year we're looking forward to the prospect of what the lads have to deliver.

"The role of academy manager is a big role now because it is not just managing from a distance. It's much more hands on. "And we're very fortunate with our group this season because we have one of the better groups in the Midlands.

Most of the players likely to feature in the U18's in the new season are Coventry or Warwickshire based. In fact, six players who were U16's last season are all Coventry born.

Rioch added: "We look to produce lads from Coventry or the ring of the Midlands because it fills us with great pleasure to produce our own and there's nothing better for supporters or the manager to have a player that has come through the ranks."

"It's important for us that we have lads that come in at all ages and that when they leave here at 18 to become either professional footballers or seek a life away from the sport they leave us as well rounded individuals.

"It's important that we develop them not only as footballers but as people."

Said midfielder Adam Walker who impressed last season for the Academy and also for City Reserves: "It's important to become a good professional, not just as a footballer but away from the pitch as well.

"You see players like Andy Marshall that are not only top players but are also top blokes as well, always around the training pitch. "It's my second year so I would like to think some of the younger lads would look up to me as me and a number of the other lads do to players in the first team."
