Warwickshire went down to a five wicket defeat against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl which was their first LV defeat of the season.

After no play on the third day of this County Championship game, the decision was taken to make a game of it on the last day.

Warwickshire skipper Darren Maddy declared on 353-5. Hampshire then batted and declared at 23-1. Warwicks declared on 0-0 leaving the Rose Bowl based side 331 to win in 92 overs.

At tea Hants had moved on to 163-3 needing 168 runs off 34 overs in the final session without the services of Brown (10),Crawley (10) and Lumb (15)

In the final session, Hants started like they were playing a Twenty20 game. t Michael Carberry was leading the way and made his first century of the season with 33 overs remaining and was up to 122 by the end of the fourth over after tea.

Jim Troughton ran out Chris Benham (40) and then Pothas (12) as run out as Warwicks tried to get back into the game.

Carberry who picked up a hamstring injury and required a runner, past the 150 mark and made his highest score in County Championship cricket when he took his total to 154.

Unfortunately, the chance of a Warwickshire win had long since gone (not helped by some umpiring decisions) and this was a case of stopping Hampshire from winning. Heath Streak bowled a long tight spell to leave the home side needing more than a run a ball

With four overs to go, thirty one was required. It was a total that was passed with Mascarenhas (38 not out) and Carberry (194 not out) steering Hampshire through to a five wicket victory and giving Warwickshire only four points.

Warwickshire play Yorkshire on Friday.
