Team GB outpowered in SWC final

Tonight, at the Leszno track in Poland in from of an expectant Polish crowd of over 25,000, the final of the speedway world cup took place between reigning champions Denmark, Aurtralia, Poland and Great Britain who contained in their 6 man line-up Bees riders Scott Nicholls, Chris Harris and Olly Allen at reserve.

For the home nation things got off to the perfect start with 4 heat wins on the bounce. Sadly for Team GB the opposite was true after 4 last places leaving a mountain to be climbed even at that very early stage.

With some frenetic racing on what was a very fast track, it became very apparent to those watching that the team who had the right set-up of engine and gearing would do well and as was expected the Poles were very much leading from the front. The Btits tho were riding very hard and trying everything that they could, it just seemed that every GB rider lacked power as they were overtaken at whim by the Poles and Danes when the need arose. Maybe some questions will be asked as to what the cause was and why what appeared to be incorrect engine set-ups for the whole GB team had happened for it did seem as though power was lacking.

By the halfway stage the title was going to go to either Poland or Denmark after a gap had been pulled out, especially so after both Australia and GB had used their jokers. This is a system designed to be used once in the meeting by each team when they are more than 7 points behind the leaders, and doubles the points scored by the nominated rider. Jason Crump for Australia suffered an engine failure at the tapes on his joker ride so zero points there, whilst Scott took the GB joker ride but despite a great start could only finish 3rd and gained 2 points.

Going into the final race of the night Poland lead Denmark by 1 point so it all came down to the result of the last race.
All Polands' Tomaz Gollob had to do was finish ahead of the Dane Hans Andersen, and he made a dream start. If that wasn't enough for the Polish crowd who were going mental then the sight of Scott Nicholls filling 2nd place made that race even sweeter, ensuring that the Dane was held back and with Gollob crossing the finishing line it confirmed Poland as the 2007 Speedway World Cup champions.

Scott scored 7 of Team GB's 15 points, with Bomber adding 3. Olly had 2 rides and whilst failing to score he certainly didn't disgrace himself.

The next meeting for the Bees, weather permitting, is this coming Monday when they are away to the Arena Essex Hammers in front of the Sky TV cameras, before their 2nd leg match in the Knock Out cup when they go to Poole holding a 13 points lead. Then on Monday 30th July Poole are due to visit Brandon for an Elite League matrch again in front of the Sky TV cameras.
