HEATH HAYES 3-1 COVENTRY SPHINX BY KEV MONKS

Coventry Sphinx supporters will have to wait a bit longer to see their side crowned as Midland Alliance Champions after crashing to their joint heaviest league defeat of the season at Heath Hayes.

Heath Hayes who moved into the Midland Combination from the West Midlands League a year ago, were the first on the scoresheet when Alan Haycock used his pace to race through and stroke the ball past Chris Daffern in just under three minutes.

Sphinx were taking their time to get into the game and found themselves three goals down after fifteen minutes.

Chris Deakin volleyed in a Matt Latham cross and less than a minute later it was three when the assistant referee failed to raise his flag for a blatant offside which allowed Richard Deakin to finish past Daffern.

Paul Charnley's side created plenty of corners but it was not until the 82nd minute that they did found the net when Craig Martin deflected in a Robbie Stevenson free kick.

Sphinx's home game against Brocton kicks off at 3.30pm on Saturday. Although a defeat for Castle Vale at Feckenham on Thursday will give Sphinx the title.

Other results saw Bedworth draw 1-1 at Willenhall, Coventry Copsewood draw 1-1 with Highgate United who now cannot win the Midland Combination title and a 3-0 home win for Massey Ferguson against Brocton and Stockingford drawing 1-1 with Leamington Hibernian.
