Coventry Sphinx lifted the Tony Allden Memorial Cup with a 4-3 win over local rivals Coventry Copsewood.

In a game to remember Tony who was struck by lightening whilst playing for Highgate United,Sphinx, playing at home, took the lead in the tenth minute when Robbie Stevenson fired home after good work by Jerome Murdock saw the ball dummied by John Woodhouse.

The Midland Combination side drew level with a stunning long range shot from Sean Isherwood on the half hour mark but Paul Charnley's side went back in front when John Woodhouse raced through and beat the keeper with a low drive.

On the stroke of half-time. Robbie Stevenson netted Sphinx's third from the penalty spot after Jerome Murdock had been pulled down.

In to the second half and Scott Furlong's side were only stopped from scoring in the 50th minute when Jamie Holmes got back to clear an Isherwood effort off the line.

Five minutes later, Jerome Murdock rounded the keeper only to fire into the side netting but in the 58th minute, Murdock broke once more and this time rounded the keeper to score.

With twenty minutes to go, Sam McCullum rifled in and in the 84th minute, a fourteen yard volley from Chris Heal reduced the score to four-three.

It set up a grandstand finish but Sphinx held firm to ensure they won the trophy for the first time.
