Speedway GP - Scandinavia

Saturday night in Manilla, Sweden, the Speedway GP rolled into town for the latest round of this years series.

Dane, and clear championship leader, Nicki Pedersen started out as the main man to beat and throughout the course of the night this proved to be the case. From his 5 qualifying rides Nicki was unbeaten.

Behind him though there was a battle for a place in the top 8 that guaranteed a semi final berth, with the Bees Scott Nicholls getting through with 7 points courtesy of having won a heat out of his 5 rides. Unfortunately Chris 'Bomber' Harris failed to make the cut, finishing with 6 points.

So with Scott into the 2nd of the semi-finals he was given no choice but to start from the unfavourable outside gate, and looked very bemused that he had to go through the protocol of choosing his gate position in front of the TV cameras!

The 1st semi-final produced an almighty scrap for 2nd place behind current world champion Jason Crump, between Nicki Pedersen and fellow Dane Hans Andersen. Hans Andersen took 2nd by what could only have been millimetres between the 2 riders as they crossed the finish line, and Nicki then complained bitterly to the referee that he had been squeezed so close to the fence that he was unfairly impeded. The referee had none of this and Nicki's night was at an end.

As said earlier, Scott came to the tapes for the 2nd semi on the outside gate, and whilst his start wasn't a bad one he cut back inside to go under the Polish rider Wieslaw Jagus. Whilst Scott chased down Tomasz Gollob well he just couldn't get the extra drive to make a pass so it was 3rd place and another point for Scott.

The GP was won by Aussie Leigh Adams, with Jason Crump making it an Australian 1-2 on the podium.
