Coventry Blaze got off to a great start in their Continetal Cup qualification tournament, with a 6-1 victory over Latvian side Liepajas Metalurgs.

Around 290 Blaze fans had made the journey to Rouen to see the Blaze take the lead on 56 seconds through Jon Weaver, who has put off an operation, assisted by Dan Carlson.

Less than three minutes later, there was more to cheer when Owen Fussy hit the second with a powerplay goal, assisted by Chambers.

Before the end of the first period, the Blaze went three goals up thanks to a short-handed goal from Dan Carlson.

Fussy scored his second goal of the match when he slammed home the fourth, 53 seconds in the second period and later in the period, he collected his hat-trick with a goal on the powerplay, assisted by Weaver.

As the end of the second came to a close, Arron Nell made the most of an assist by Luke Fulghum to hit the sixth.

Brett Jaeger had a good night inbetween the pipes for the Blaze but he didn't get a clean sheet as Liepajas scored five minutes from time in a match dominated by a superb Blaze side.

Blaze face Cracovia Krakow on Saturday. Face off is at 3.30pm UK time and you can hear how they get on by tuning into BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.
