Devonish Through To World Championships

Marlon Devonish rubber-stamped his place in next month's IAAF World Championships after finishing third in men's 100m final at Aviva UK Championships in Perry Barr, Birmingham over the weekend.

While Dwain Chambers' first place in 10.09secs was virtually a foregone conclusion, the 35-year-old Coventry Godiva 2004 Olympic sprint relay gold medallist lost out to second place to Harry Aikines-Aryeetey in a photo finish.

Devonish, who is still willing to help out his beloved Coventry City with their fitness, said: "You can never have too many medals.

"I've been ill for a week so I had to draw on so much experience. I ran OK but I could have run so much better. I'm happy with coming third and that was a season's best so . . . I'm still a championships performer.

"I don't care how old I am. Look I'm doing it, I'm mixing with the young guys. To all those guys in their mid-30s, you can still have aspirations."

Other Coventry Godiva AC performances at Alexander Stadium, which will be the home to USA and Jamaica 2012 Olympic Squad, saw Omas Anyanwu failing to progress past the first round heats of 100m while Celia Taylor failed to finish in the 1500m final which was won by Oxford's Hannah England.
