Coventry Bears Rugby League beat Heworth this afternoon at Butts Park Arena.

Coventry led 24-6 at the break and added to that in the second half to win 44-10.

Coventry Bears secured another good victory against northern opposition on Saturday comfortably dispatching Heworth from York. The Coventry team have been improving all season and this result made it 4 wins in a row in the National conference division 3.

Scoring was opened after 5 minutes by the away team as Chris Varley caught the Bears from 20 yards out and wrong footed the defence in a moment of poor concentration from the Bears. The try was converted by prop Watkinson. 0-6 to Heworth.

This score was short lived however as the Bears started to warm up after 13 minutes and Gregg Moore stepped through on the right to sidestep the defence and score a nice individual try. Converted by Stephen Coleman to take the scores to 6-6.

Almost immediately more continued pressure from the Bears and good field position allowed Alex Brown to  grubber the ball through and regain it himself to score another great individual effort to take it to 10-6. Again Stephen Coleman converted 12-6 to the Bears.

From a Bears scrum it was the turn of pacey Rich Synott to literally ghost past his opposite number to out-pace the defence to score after 17 minutes. 16-6. The try was again converted by Coleman the South Sydney loose forward really on target with the boot. 18-6 to Coventry.

The Bears don’t let up as the pack starts to find the gaps and make breaks and after Tim Stevens broke the line on the 20 minute mark Chris Barrett was on hand to follow up and score to take it to 22-6. Again the ever present Coleman converts 24-6 to the Bears.

There were no further scores in the first half as the Bears just keep building the pressure on Heworth. The York team failing to threaten the Bears and seem to be getting more frustrated.

Half time score 24-6 to Coventry Bears.

It’s not until the 50 minute mark when after a good cross-field kick by Trent Achilles gives Rich Synott the opportunity to rise above the defence and offload to Tawanda Chipadza to score in the left corner. The winger pops up at the right time to finish off another good Bears effort. 28-6.

Rich Synott is the go to man again wide on the left as after short ball from standoff Trent Achilles he beats his man one on one to race over taking the score to 32-6 on 56 minutes.

Heworth hit back from another lapse in the Bears concentration as Adam Whitington goes over from a well timed pass to make it 32-10. This was uncharacteristic from the Bears as there defence had been solid all afternoon.

The Bears pack really start to dominate and after man of the match prop forward Matt Cooper breaks the line on 74 mins and makes a 40 m break. Young second rower George Carlton is on hand to race to the line and score. Coleman converts to make the score 38-10.

In the last minute Gregg Moore’s sublime cross-field kick is collected by Chris Barrett to power over unchallenged wide on the right to make it an empathic 44-10 victory to Coventry.
