Coventry Blaze have signed Canadian forward, Derek Campbell from the Newcastle Vipers.

Hailing from Nepean in Ontario, the 29 year old winger has played for Manchester before joining Newcastle Vipers.

"I knew exactly what I wanted for my final import forward slot," said Blaze Coach Paul Thompson to his side's website. " I wanted a strong skating winger who could play on the first two lines, who could score us twenty odd goals in the season, who played hard, was fiercely competitive and would have no hesitation in sticking up for his team mates on this ice.

"I looked at so many possible players but I kept coming back to Derek. He ticked every box that I was looking for. He can score goals, create opportunities for others, he's hardworking, gives everything on the ice, will fight anyone when required and he wants to come to a top club that will give him the chance to win. The more I looked at it, the more I realised that he is exactly what I'm looking for and what this team needs.

"He's one of those players that the fans love to hate when he's playing against us, but who becomes a real fan favourite when he plays for us. He loves playing at the Skydome and he can't wait to play for the Blaze fans as he knows just how good they are when they get behind a player. I'm really looking forward to him joining us."

Blaze supporters will have the chance to meet Derek and welcome him to the club at a special event on Sunday 5th July at Crosby's Bar at the Skydome Arena from 6pm onwards.

Thompson has confirmed that the signing of Campbell means that he will not be offering new contracts to Carlyle Lewis, Sylvain Deschatelets or Erik Hjalmarsson.
