Blaze Edging Closer To The Title

Coventry Blaze beat Belfast Giants 6-4 tonight at the Sky Dome to take another step to capturing the Elite League title.

In a must win game at the Sky Dome tonight, the Blaze delighted a packed crowd when Greg Chambers fired them ahead on 4.31 with a powerplay goal, assisted by Adam Calder and Jon Weaver.

A second game, nine and a half minutes later thanks to Dan Carlson finding the net with a short handed goal, assisted by Weaver again.

Back came Belfast and on 15.53, Craig Peacock reduced the arrears before Steve Thornton tied the game six and a half minutes into the second period.

Play was level until there was less than three minutes remaining in the second period. Suddenly, The Blaze support were a lot happier when Greg Owen fired in, assisted by Russ Cowley and Derek Campbell on 37.05, followed by Jon Weaver, netting with a powerplay goal on 39.22 thanks to assists from Luke Fulghum and Greg Chambers.

On 46.19, Belfast made it 3-4 with a powerplay goal from Colin Shields. Coventry hit their fifth on 51.09 thanks to Dan Carlson's second of the night, assisted by Luke Fulghum and Derek Campbell.

Belfast went up the other end and Craig Peacock hit his second of the night on 52.55 with a powerplay goal. The visitors pulled their net minder and with 41 seconds of the match remaining, Luke Fulghum made it 6-4 to Coventry with an Empty Net Goal, assisted by Adam Calder and Brian Lee.

On Wednesday night, the Blaze play Sheffield Scimitars in a friendly before their away game at the Steelers, who beat Hull 6-2 tonight, on Friday night.

Saturday night sees Cardiff Devils at the Sky Dome.
