Coventry Blaze beat Sheffield Steelers 5-2 in an Elite League fixture tonight.

In an end to end opening period at the Sky Dome in front of a good crowd including a few hundred Steelers fans, Blaze, who were able to field their strongest team, took the lead on 17.51 when Russ Cowley smashed the puck into the net past Verner.

Into the second and two minutes, 41 seconds in, the Blaze delighted their support when they went 2-0 up thanks to Derek Campbell scoring from a Lee assist.

Three minutes later, Adam Calder, who scored twice in the victory at Hull last night, added a third for the Blaze assisted by Cowley and Campbell.

On 28.08, Sheffield pulled back a short handed goal thanks to Matt Hubbaur, assisted by Joe Talbot.

However, back came the Blaze through Dan Carlson on 35.26, who fired a shot which Verner appeared to take over the line. The Steelers were fuming
but the goal was given.

There were no more goals until the third period and it was Luke Fulghum who went one on one in the 45th minute and hit the back of the net with a short handed goal to make it 5-1 to the Blaze.

Dan Cruickshank pulled one back for the visitors who have struggled since winning the Elite League last season on 54.59. It lifted their fans who made plenty of noise but it was the Blaze who won 5-2.

On Wednesday night, the Blaze are away to Cardiff Devils. Face off is at 7.30pm and next Saturday, they travel to Newcastle Vipers.
