Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Club have confirmed that Canadian defenceman, Mike Egener is to return to the club.

After an outstanding debut season for the Blaze, Egener was due to return to the club as this season’s captain before being struck down with Guillaume-Barre Syndrome – a serious condition that forced him to take time out from the sport to focus on his recovery.

Three months later, 29 year old Egener has been passed clear to resume his playing career by his neurologist and has put pen to paper on a new contract that will see him in Coventry colours for the remainder of this season and the following 2014/15 season.

Egener, is expected to fly to the UK early next week,  spending next week practicing with the team with a view to making his return to the ice in next weekend’s home game series against the Belfast Giants.

Coventry Blaze have also confirmed the re-signing of former captain Shea Guthrie from Troja-Ljungby in Sweden.

The former New York Islanders draft pick returns to the club he joined at the start of the 2011/12 season going on to score 155 points in 126 games over two seasons before signing for former Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson in Sweden last summer.

The twenty-six year old Canadian was released by Troja-Ljungby earlier this week which led to a huge number of immediate contract offers from clubs all around the world but after virtually two solid days of discussions, Guthrie opted to return to the Blaze.
