Coventry Blaze went down to a 3-2 defeat at Sheffield Steelers on Saturday night.

Sheffield took the lead when Ben Simon scored in the 22nd minute but Luke Fulghum soon replied with a short handed goal.

With 79 seconds of the match left, Dan Carlson fired Coventry in to the lead but with 25 seconds remaining, Derek Campbell levelled to take the match into over time.

The extra time failed to produce a goal and when the match went to penalties, Joey Talbot scored the only penalty to give Sheffield the win.

Blaze Coach Paul Thompson said to the Blaze official website: "It was a great advert for hockey. Both teams had lots of chances and both goaltenders had great games.

"But we should have closed the game out when we went ahead with just over a minute left. We switched off, didn't pick up Campbell and got punished.

"We then missed all three in the shoot-out and they are something we are normally good at. It's annoying.

"I am disappointed we have not come away with both points, we got ourselves into a position to do so and just switched off.

"We have had so many close games this season, it's about time we started turning them into wins."

The teams meet again at the Skydome on Sunday night.
