Coventry’s Bronzed Adonis Steve Beaton came back from the brink of defeat to edge out world number 6 James Wade in the first round of ITV4-televised Cash Converters Players Championship Darts Finals at Butlin’s Minehead Resort, writes Ziad Chaudry.

In a splendid opening day filled full of compelling comebacks, the 49-year-old former BDO world champion clawed himself from 5-3 down to snatch the deciding eleventh leg on a thirteen dart finish.

“I never give in,” said a chuffed Beaton afterwards who completed the match hitting a double 18.

“We’ve always had good games and it always goes to the last leg so I weren’t surprised it went to the last leg again.

“The thing that I am trying to keep myself a bit calmer instead of being roped up in the game.

“When it got to 5-all and I had the darts it was up to me to lose it then.”

Beaton, the current world number 22, next play Wes Newton from Fleetwood, who easily beat Studley’s ‘Pie Man’ Andy Smith 6-2, for a place in Sunday’s last eight.
