Another Tough Knight For Jets

Last updated : 20 June 2011 By Adam Etheridge

The Coventry Jets nightmare 2011 season continued apace on Saturday as they were defeated 52-17 by the Farnham Knights on a soggy afternoon at Coventry Saracens RFC. The visitors were once again paced by running back Kingsley Ejigou who repeated his 4 touchdown haul from their previous meeting three weeks ago. Coventry’s scores came courtesy of Adam Biggs, Tony Perkins and Josh Hughes.

Coventry started well enough, Chris Shorey snared a career long 75 yard reception, the sophomore receiver powered his way past several defenders before being hauled down short of the endzone. Biggs, playing at receiver for the first time in his seven year Jets career, marked his positional change with a 15 yard touchdown from Martin Ringeisen.

Perkins’ broke four tackles on his way to a 55 yard touchdown, his longest in three years. The Jets turned the ball over too often once more, a problem they’ve had for the past few seasons. Poor ball protection was especially problematic with Coventry’s receivers putting too many passes down. “The weather was definitely a factor” stated Head Coach Gerry McManus “but we can’t use that as an excuse, it’s the same for both teams.”

Hughes booted his first Jets field goal, connecting from 25 yards, but it wasn’t enough to send Coventry in at the break with the lead, trailing 26-17. Farnham came out stronger in the second half, a 44 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown was the final nail in the Jets coffin. McManus’ squad are fast running out of opportunities to get their season on track, dropping their first four Premiership games and with a brutal schedule to come in July and August.

McManus and the Jets travel to Tamworth next weekend looking to gain revenge for a 40-6 loss at home last week.
