Coventry City put in a hard working performance to beat Aston Villa 2-1.

A blustery Armistice morning at the Alan Higgs Centre saw plenty of entertainment early on.

Reis Ashraf twice went close before a ninth minute Villa corner bobbled around the area which the dependable Chris Duggan raced into clear.

The Sky Blues always looked liked scoring and took the lead in the 29th minute when Andy Gooding curled a free kick into the top corner from 23 yards.

One goal became two three minutes later, central defender Callum Burgess collected a corner on the edge of the area and thumped a shot which hit a defender and bounced down off the crossbar before crossing the line.

Cameron Belford had a fine game in goal for Brian Borrows side and superbly blocked as James Collins raced through.

In the 36th minute,Danny Earls smacked the far post following a corner. Villa kept up the pressure and in the 49th minute, Chris Duggan had to clear off the line when James Collins rose from a corner.

In the 53rd minute, half time substitute Nathan Alfonso jinked his way past Burgess and lifted the ball over Belford to pull a goal back.

Villa piled on the pressure but Belford and the City defence were more than equal and although it was close, it was a satisfying victory.
