Renamed Ricoh Arena To Host 12 Olympic Football Games

Coventry's Ricoh Arena will be temporarily renamed as the City of Coventry Stadium for the duration of the 2012 Olympic Games ans will be the venue for 12 matches in both the women's and men's competitions.

The Olympic football competition will start two days before the official opening ceremony in London with the first games in Coventry taking place on July 25 when two women's games will be played, the first kicking off at 5:00pm .

Tickets for the all games to be played at Coventry will go on sale from Tuesday 15 March 2011 and can be obtained from the Ricoh ticket office.

The schedule for the 2012 London Olympic Games was released by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) yesterday. The schedule gives the times,dates and venues for every one of the 640 sessions of all 26 Olympic sports.

The chief executive of the Ricoh Arena Daniel Gidney, spoke of his pride that Coventry had been chosen to host the first event of the 2012 Olympic Games.

"The announcement of the sports competition schedule is another step towards this magnificent global event taking place right here in the city," he told the CT.

"The fact that we are the first English city to be staging an Olympic event at the 2012 Games will raise our national and international profile even further. We are all thrilled to be staging women's and men's football matches in the Olympic Games and we look forward to welcoming all the players, coaches, officials and spectators.

"This is a once in a lifetime event and I would urge everyone to pre-register for their tickets to make sure they don't miss out on being part of the Olympic Games experience in Coventry."

After the two games to be played on the opening day, The City of Coventry Stadium will then be the venue for a men's game on July 26th.Then two more women's games will be played on July 28th and two men's matches on the 29th. Another women's game will be played on July 31st and then two men's matches will be played on August 1st.

One of the women's quarter finals is scheduled to be played on August 3 with the bronze medal match on August 9.

The schedule has been announced ahead of tickets going on sale in order to allow people to plan which events they would like to attend. Those wishing to purchase tickets must first register at www.tickets.london2012.com

The Olympic ticket application process will then open from March 15.

The process for purchasing all Olympic Games tickets will open for six weeks, enabling people to consider the options before making their final choices. Applications will close on April 26, 2011 and all oversubscribed events will be allocated via a ballot process.

Applications can be made at any point during the six-week application period and it is not a first come, first served process.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership manager for the 2012 Games ,Tom Clift, said, "It is a great honour and the people of Coventry and Warwickshire should rightly be proud that their city has been chosen for such a prestigious occasion.

"Staging Olympic football is the pinnacle of a whole host of projects and events that have been happening across the sub-region over the past five years as part of our involvement with the London 2012 Games.

"We have a comprehensive schedule of events planned to celebrate the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Coventry and Warwickshire and we want local people to be part of London 2012, not only in their home country, but in their home city."
