COVENTRY CITY LADIES 3-1 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY BY KEV MONKS
Coventry City Ladies collected their first victory of the season with a fine 3-1 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday.
With Mark Phillips' players determined to make amends after a 3-0 defeat at bottom club Middlesbrough and a 7-1 home mauling by high flyers Blackburn Rovers. City defied the wet and miserable conditions at Coventry Sphinx to take a 29th minute lead when Katy Box collected a pass from Amanda Whalley and drove the ball home from the right hand side of the penalty area.
Coventry continued to press and Box added a second in the 72nd minute when Katy Box out-paced the Owls defence before lashing a left footed effort into the top corner from the edge of the area.
Three minutes later, City wrapped up the game and moved out of the relegation zone as a long ball forward by Michelle Hickmott was dropped by the visiting keeper as Sarah Marshall came in. The ball hit the City striker on the backside before trickling into the net.
With two minutes remaining, Wednesday scored a consolation when a miss hit Rachel Booker shot rolled in at the far post.
Mark Phillips gave his side full credit for the win saying: "This was a fantastic win for us and the girls did very well. "It was hard fought but they did everything we asked of them, scoring two quality goals and we are all very happy about this win"
