TRANMERE ROVERS 0-0 COVENTRY CITY BY KEV MONKS
Coventry City failed to impress in a 0-0 draw at Tranmere Rovers.
As with the game at Notts County,we travelled to The Wirral on the Sky Blue Trust's coach and arrived in time for a pint and to see City fielding a strong team with a first start for Wayne Andrews who came through an hour of Monday's game at Banbury,
Gary McSheffrey started amid speculation of a £4m bid from Birmingham City and talk of a move for West Ham's Bobby Zamora.
Former Sky Blue Gavin Ward was the busier of the two keepers in the opening exchanges and in the 21st minute,he pulled off an excellent save to stop a low fourteen yard drive from McSheffrey.
Ronnie Moore's side went close two minutes later when a free kick from the impressive Chris Shuker span across the face of the goal.
The former Manchester City and Barnsley winger went even closer a minute later, collecting a deep cross from Kevin Ellison and smacking a close range against the foot of the post.
In the 32nd minute,Shuker struck the woodwork again with a shot which deflected off Elliott Ward and looped on to the crossbar.
The few hundred City fans were pretty quiet throughout the first half as Tranmere were allowed to dominate the play.
In the last seconds,Calvin Zola curled inches wide as the defence was again caught static.
Robert Page and Dele Adebola were brought on at the break and Page was involved blocking an early Ellison effort.
The City fans who gave Gavin Ward a good reception, found their voices and a chorus "Twist N Shout" lasted a good eight minutes.
When City did push forward,it was Stephen Hughes was normally involved, playing some good ball to McSheffrey or Stern John who curled wide on the hour mark. David McNamee also made some good runs down the right.
In the 66th minute,Adams made five changes and two minutes later threw on Andy Whing for Marcus Hall.
The singing and banter with seven home supporters continued until the 75th minute when a Colin Cameron shot rasped the bar and fell for Jorgensen to get in a header which was blocked.
City offered nothing more and the only winners were the City supporters who made the journey to Birkenhead.
After the game, the Trust coach had a window bricked as it made its way towards the motorway.
