Not A Good Friday For Coventry City

Coventry City were relegated to League Two after only drawing 1-1 at home to Charlton Athletic.

With a furore over season ticket prices, the Sky Blues took on Charlton Athletic at the Ricoh needing to win their remaining four matches and hope that other results went their way.

As Bobby Gould and John Salako watched from the press box, City without Nathan Clarke and Kevin Foley took to the pitch on a grey afternoon and after good numbers of both sets of supporters had marched to the ground together.

The start of the game was delayed and then when it kicked off., more plastic pigs were thrown on and the referee took the players back down the tunnel.

At 3.13pm play restarted and City, managed by Mark Robins, who clearly has been used by Tim Fisher and co, to try and sell season tickets, started brightly with a sixth minute Jodi Jones shot pushed away by Declan Rudd in the Addicts goal.

Charlton should have scored in the 20th minute when Chris Solly, planted a header onto the cross bar.

Gael Bigirimana tried to get the City players going but it was Charlton who looked the more threatening.

George Thomas won City a 27th minute corner. The corner was taken short and went over to Ben Stevenson who drove the ball forward from the edge of the area. George Thomas got a touch and with Chesterfield losing, City were a goal up and off the bottom of the league.

Bigirimana fired at Rudd in the 35th minute and two minutes later, a great run and shot by Jones saw Rudd down to his left to conceded a corner.

Charlton, without Lewis Page, won two corners as five minutes were added on whilst elsewhere results confined to go City's way.

City came out looking for a second goal and had a corner and Jones fire wide within the opening five minutes.

A great ball from the industrious Stevenson forced Rudd to come out and block. City attacked and Jones fired wide again.

Charlton went up the other end and won a 54th minute corner. Lee Burge had caught one poor flag kick but this was better and Patrick Bauerwas left to use his considerable height to head home and produce a load of red flares from the away end.

There were Sisu Out Chants as the acrid smoke took its time to die away which was the same as City's faint hopes of staying in the division.

City won a 62nd minute corner, Stevenson volleyed wide and Kwame Thomas drove wide as Ruben Lameiras worked to try and get more attacks for the Sky Blues who manager was stood with his hands in his coat pocket looking on forlornly.

Twist N Shout boomed out of the section to the left of the scoreboard as Rudd saved with twenty minutes left.

Jordan Foley limped off and was replaced by former Charlton player Kevin Foley and Kyel Reid came on for Jodi Jones.

However, it looked a bad move as minutes later, Ryan Haynes went down but after treatment, walked off very gingerly.

Haynes had no choice to carry on in a side which had Rawson and Turnbull doing well to hold things in defence.

Burge saved from Forster-Caskey with five minutes left.

Another City free kick sailed over Rudd's bar as the pitch side security intensified to try and stop any pitch invasions from either sets of supporters.

City won a 90th minute corner. But that was easily caught and City went into League Two.
