Coventry Sphinx were beaten 2-1 at Walsall Wood in a Midland Alliance fixture.

Luke Hopkins had Ashley Cain available but was without a number of players for a game which saw his side start well with Rickie Cutting having a 21st minute effort saved by the keeper’s leg.

Sphinx might have had the play but they found themselves two goals down in the space of six minutes.

Walsall had a free kick in the 28th minute. The ball was knocked on and Lee Stretton was at the far post to score from a couple of yards out.

Just over five minutes later, the Sphinx players appealed for offside when a cross was met by Harry Harris who sent a looping header towards the goal. The ball was over the line when it was kicked away.

Sphinx had a couple of good chances with a Cain soshot cleared off the line before Kyle Baxter limped off and was replaced by Matty Fowler at the break.

Cain had a shot grabbed by the keeper and Cutting headed wide‎ before a 70th minute corner led to a throw in.  A long thrown had the Walsall defence in trouble and there was Ashley Jackson to bundle the ball into the net.

Sphinx continued to look for a second goal with the home keeper making a great punch from a 77th minute free kick.

But, it was not Sphinx's night and they went down to a defeat on a night when a draw was a fair result.
