We Were Awful - Hopkins

Coventry Sphinx manager Luke Hopkins admitted that his team were awful during their 3-0 defeat at Kirby Muxloe on Saturday.

“We were awful,” Hopkins said. “The game on Saturday summed up our season where previous games had seen us beating Highgate away and drawing with Tividale and then losing to Kirby Muxloe, a team we should be beating in my opinion.

“We started poorly and it was only Ashley Jackson who had any will to win, something which got him ten stitches in his forehead from a nasty elbow.  The referee gave a free kick and a booking but if he had seen the incident it should have been a red car for how serious it was. Losing Ash ten minutes into the game was a massive blow for us.

“We just never got a grip of the game and it punished us. We had a couple have chances through Luke Williams who was the only one to actually did as was asked of him.

“Being a goal down at half time, I thought we would have the desire to go out and win. We certainly have the quality against teams like this but it just didn't happen and it seems some of the players are just turning up in body to see out the fixtures and in my eyes letting a top six place slip away.

“We have three tough fixtures left and I may as well look at young lads who want to be around next season.”
