Coventry City CEO Steve Waggott has said that he wants to build on the work that has been done with Sky Blues In The Community.

Mr Waggott is keen to keep the club's community profile high and and help even more people get involved with its community projects and activities.

Mr Waggott said to the Coventry Telegrap: “When I first arrived at the club, the plan was to really step up the engagement with the community. We did begin that process but then the move to Northampton happened.

“Through the work of the community team we were still working across the community during that period – players were going into schools and visiting community projects – but we have to be honest, that would have worked better with the team playing in the city.

“David and Sky Blues in the Community have, however, helped to ensure that the Coventry City name was still visible across Coventry and Warwickshire and that we were seen in a positive light.

“Of course, nothing could replace the club playing back in the heart of the community but it means the bedrock was there when we returned.

“Football had started to become detached from the places and the people that were once the very essence of the sport.

“So we wanted to take the club back to the community. Coventry City Football Club has to do the same.

“Through David Busst’s team it is happening and they engage with thousands of people across the region but as a club we want to do more and I want to personally oversee that with David. There are also initiatives we are looking to introduce around support for the Academy and getting local businesses involved with that. There is an optimistic feeling in the city around the football club and it is important we get things right off the field as well as on it.

“Steven Pressley and the team know that their main duty is delivering results on the pitch but they are also very keen to buy into their role in the community – especially with so many home-grown players in the squad.

“And we need to think about how all of this can lead to creating that next generation of Sky Blues fans. For example, Sky Blues in the Community run MiniKickers, Saturday club and multi-sport coaching sessions on Saturday mornings for youngsters across Coventry and Warwickshire – is there a way we can turn that into a whole day of activities that results in them coming to watch the match too?

“The opportunity is there for us to really make a difference in the community and grow the supporter base too. As I saw at Charlton, it shouldn’t be seen as on the periphery for the football club, it should be front and centre."
