Peter Reid claims he has already lined up a replacement for Calum Davenport and another player.

Speaking to the CET's Andy Turner,he said: “I have had a chat with the chairman and there will be a certain amount of money to spend, which I am delighted about.

“I think we will be dipping into the market for the first time in a long time. I can’t remember the last time I bought a player for money because I didn’t at Leeds, so I have forgotten what to do.

“But it is up to me to spend the money wisely. We have to get a replacement in for the Leeds game, and the money gives us a chance to get more than one player in to strengthen the squad.

“We have got back-to-back wins against two good sides and we need to push on from here. I have been working on deals and hopefully they will be ready for the Leeds game.

”You want to keep your best players but in today’s football climate when players are coming out of contract I don’t think a football club like ours with our financial situation can wait for the summer.

“The lad was not going to sign a deal (not offered one according to rumours .ED) and I can understand that because if I was a young player I would want to play for a Premiership side. It is nothing against Calum but I don’t trust tribunals and I think the deal we have got – £3 million overall – is good money.

”I have only been at this club a short time and Calum has been outstanding from my first game against Crystal Palace, but he is a Premiership footballer.

“The boy showed out there against West Ham just what a player he is. I can remember him heading loads of balls out but I can remember one block on Teddy Sheringham which just typifies him.

“It was a difficult game for the kid because the deal was being negotiated and it was a game in which he could have shirked it, but he’s not like that. The lad has got character and that’s why he will be a success in the Premiership.

“I don’t think it was a risk playing him because the boy’s a footballer and I knew I would get the terrific tackles and headers from him, so I had no qualms about playing him.

“I don’t think his agent wanted him to play and I can understand that but I don’t think we would have got the three points if he hadn’t played."
