Ashley Cain has said that he was proud to have made his Coventry City debut.

The winger, who has been named as the Covsupport News Service City U18's Player Of The Year, is a City supporter and came on against Charlton Athletic on Monday.

"I was very proud to make my debut and was happy with my performance," said Cain to the CT.

"I could have scored near the end and I am sure if I get on a few more times I can get more chances when I get down that right-hand side, which is what I like doing. I think the keeper got a little touch. The bobbly ground didn't help but I will know what to do next time.

"I grew up in Nuneaton and have always supported Coventry. The first match I went to was against Manchester United when we won - the game that Darren Huckerby scored a fantastic goal - so I have always been a big supporter and played for the club's academy since I was nine. So to finally get out on that pitch on Monday was amazing.

"I have been waiting for my chance and I just want to get my head down and keep working hard. I was slightly nervous but with my type of game you have to play with confidence and that's what I tried to do, and do what I am best at which is getting the ball and running.

"I have been in and around the squad for a few months and going on all the away trips with the first team, which has been good experience, and that helped me a lot to prepare me for my debut, helping to calm my nerves.

"It was nice to get a bit of encouragement from the fans every time I got the ball and ran down the line, so that was great to hear and really helped me.

"This is what you work hard for, to get time on the pitch and that was amazing and I just want to drive on and prove myself to the gaffer. He had a little word with me and told me to keep pushing and working hard.

"I had an inkling that I might get on at some stage and then I got a call in the second half and that was a great moment for me. The manager just told me to enjoy myself and stay confident and do what I am good at, so it was just pure encouragement for me and good words of advice."
