Mowbray Up For FA Cup Run

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray wants the Sky Blues to have a run in the FA Cup.

The City boss whose side have been drawn at home to Northampton Town in the First Round, wants a cup run to provide money to add to his budget and told the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole: “We want to go as far as we can – it’s the FA Cup!

“The history of this club and the cup is there in the record books so we need to do the very best we can and in all rounds we’ll play the strongest team available.

“We went out on penalties at Rochdale in a game that could have gone either way and it was the same at Yeovil so as far as we’re concerned we didn’t lose either game and there’s no negative vibe within the group.

“But with all due respect to those competitions, the FA Cup is more of a priority – it should be a priority for all clubs.

“Arsenal have won it for the last couple of years and without those trophies Arsene Wenger would be under more pressure than he usually is.

“At our level it’s all about finance – the extra revenue stream if you can get to round three or four and draw a huge team, fill the stadium, get the TV rights or go to somewhere like Old Trafford which really gets the fans buzzing.

“If we can get that sort of money it could help us through latter stages of the league season, so it’s vitally important.

“First and foremost, though, we’ve got to concentrate on Northampton and although I think that’s a good draw for us they might well think it’s a good draw for them.

“I don’t think there’s a big gulf between League One and League Two as we found out in pre-season when we played Oxford, Cambridge, Luton and Portsmouth and then in the JPT against Yeovil.

“There’s some very tough teams out there so I’m certainly not sitting here thinking ‘that’s a nice easy draw.’

“But the pleasing thing for me is that’s it not another team in our league – teams that we know, that we’ve played recently or have got to play again soon.

“It means a little bit of extra scouting work because we’ll have to go out and look at them, work out how we plan to get through the tie, but that's fine.”
