According to Skysports.com, "Luton Town are keen to recruit Gary McSheffrey on a permanent basis after chairman Bill Tomlins revealed the high-flying Hatters beat off competition from Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers to land the forward. Coventry City agreed to loan McSheffrey back to Kenilworth Road, where he had already made an earlier impact in a temporary stint, and Luton are interested in discussing a deal.

"He had made the choice to come to Luton ahead of six other clubs - from Sunderland to our opponents on Saturday," Tomlins told Luton Today. His contract, as I understand it, is up at the end of the season and everyone knows what he brings to the side so we're looking at that very carefully. "I've spoken to the Coventry chairman about it and we'll have to wait and see what happens."

The declaration that Championship side Sunderland were beaten to the punch by the League One leaders suggests that the Bedfordshire outfit are doing just as well off the pitch as they are on it at the moment.

However,we can reveal that there is no foundation to the story. Gary McSheffrey did not turned down any club in order to join Luton on loan.
