Knox had been brought to the club by Eric Black and for a spell last season took over as reserve team manager when Gary Mills left for Notts County. Knox worked as a coach with Black until both were sacked by Chairman Mike McGinnity in May.
Everton,Millwall and Glasgow Rangers are amongst Knox's former clubs.
